Lyrics I Love

 I love music. I love making my own, I like listening to what others have made. Every bit of music is just amazing to me. Who figured out that making a taut string at a certain level of stretch and density would create a consistent, musical sound? And how does music convey such powerful emotions through little more than sound?

After my first breakup, I found that listening to music was very therapeutic in figuring out my feelings: certain lines in different songs would stand out as mine. Words and feelings I needed to understand, but couldn't use my own words for. Phrases and melodies that helped me work through my own complex emotions by showing me how someone else already did.

Knowing that other people feel what I feel, that the confusing and complex and crowded emotions in my brain can be worked out, can be simplified. I may not understand how, or why, but music has a way of taking my jumbled mess of emotions and clarifying for me exactly what I'm feeling, whether it's one thing or many.

Oftentimes I have found myself in a weird mood that I couldn't quite put a name on. And oftentimes I will scroll through my music app until I find a song that matches my mood. A song with someone else's words and melody, but my feelings.

When I am frustrated, I like listening to angsty stuff with lyrics that I can yell, but, more importantly, that I relate to. When I am sad or melancholic, I like listening to nostalgic, reminisce-y songs. When I am happy, musicals and soundtracks all the way! I love songs that tell a story.

I love the way music is something both collective and entirely individual. I guarantee you there is no one single song out there that everyone likes and relates to. But I can guarantee you that everyone out there has at least one song they like and relate to. Isn't that amazing??

My geography teacher last semester spent a day or two talking about language, and how there is no perfect translation for any language into another. Except music. Anyone, speaking any language, can listen to a song and feel the meaning. Even if they don't understand the words!
